Simon Tyler knows his job as a gay romance author makes his lack of faith in love more than a little ironic, but he’s tired of being used for his wallet. When a night out turns into a matchmaking scheme orchestrated by his best friends, Simon’s not thrilled, but since he’s not the target and he’s sworn off happily-ever-after anyway, he goes along with it… until he meets Adrian, the object of their efforts, and finds perhaps he hasn’t given up on love after all.
Professor Adrian Keys has tried to date Hearing men before, but being Deaf himself, he’s never had any success at making a connection. After his friends con him into going out and Adrian realizes it’s all an elaborate plan to set him up, he braces for yet another failure, only to discover there is a spark—except it’s not with the man his friends had in mind, but with Simon Tyler instead.
Not all their friends have found a way past their romantic failures, but Simon and Adrian might be on the path to happily-ever-after.
When he was finished dressing, Simon looked himself over in the full-length mirror in his large walk-in closet and nodded. The gray polished wool Korean slim-style peacoat with mini lapels and a Mandarin collar over a thin maroon faux turtleneck sweater and a pair of lightweight gray dress slacks worked well in his opinion. The slight tapering at the waist accentuated his lean but slightly muscular form without making him look too thin, he hoped.
Simon stepped back from the mirror and took a quick selfie, sending to Chase, Dale, and James, asking their opinion on his outfit. When he quickly received three positive responses, he finally calmed some. Now he just had to hope Adrian liked the way he looked as much as his friends did.
He slipped the jacket off again, not wanting to get hot as he waited for Adrian to arrive. Back in the living room, Simon draped it over one of the large overstuffed chairs before checking his watch, again. When he realized he still had half an hour, he started pacing, his nerves and racing thoughts increasing as he moved. What if he doesn’t like me once he gets to know me? What if he wants a different kind of guy? What if I’m just not the kind of guy anyone will ever love and want to keep?
When the doorbell rang, Simon was so tangled in doubts and worries he jumped and gasped. “Just a minute,” he called out before he remembered Adrian couldn’t hear him. Shaking his head at his stupidity, he hurried to open the door.
“Hello.” Adrian stood before him dressed simply. But wow! The dark smoky-gray V-neck pullover cashmere sweater, layered over what appeared to be a bright green silk T-shirt, hugged his fit body well. On his lower half he wore a fitted pair of gray straight-leg jeans and—he blinked hard, startled but enchanted—a pair of Chuck Taylor All Stars. The outer area was green, the inner canvas a dark gray, and the laces were half and half—the opposite color to the side they were coming from.
It took a moment for Simon’s brain to kick in. When he managed to pull his gaze from Adrian’s clothes, he smiled, thoroughly enjoying the light blush on the sexy man’s cheeks. “Hi. You want to come in while I get my jacket?”
“Thank you,” Adrian spoke, his voice softer but still clear, though Simon also noted his hands twitched at the same time.
Simon wondered idly if Adrian was trying not to sign to make him more comfortable and frowned as he retrieved his jacket and slipped it on. “I don’t know where you picked. Is this okay?” he asked, holding his arms out for approval. He knew it was a bad habit, but his last two boyfriends had harped on him regularly about his “odd sense of fashion.”
“Edible,” Adrian replied, the blush that hadn’t completely gone away suddenly getting much more pronounced.
Simon grinned, not caring if Adrian thought him silly. “Thank you,” he said and tried out the sign he’d picked up from the website earlier. “Shall we?” he added without signing.
Adrian signed something, but he had no idea what.
“I—” He paused, fidgeting as he continued “—I only remember a couple of the signs I looked up. What…. What did you say?”
Adrian laughed, a carefree, almost childish sound, completely at odds with the rich deepness of his voice. “I said, ‘You’re welcome and yes.’ As in ‘Let’s go.’ I’m eager to get you started on our date.”
Moments later they were down the stairs and on their way.
