Character Interview, Blog Tour, & Giveaway – Prickly Business by Piper Vaughn and Kenzie Cade

Hi, guys. Thanks to Charlie for hosting us today! It’s always a pleasure to stop by The Purple Rose Tea House. :)

Piper: We thought we’d do another fun post today and interview our main characters. For those who haven’t read the blurb yet, our characters are Dylan, a wolf shifter, and Avery, a hedgehog shifter. Dylan was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, but Avery is a transplant to Oregon from Louisiana. As you can see in the blurb, they’re estranged when the story begins, and as you can probably imagine their road to romance is riddled with potholes.

We hope you enjoy the interview and learning a bit about our boys! :)

Dylan: *walks in and sits* Sorry we’re late. The brat had to spend an extra half hour in the bathroom getting ready.

Avery: *huffs and sits down next to Dylan* This kind of beauty takes time, honey. I can’t just throw on jeans and a T-shirt and stroll out of the house.

Dylan: It’s an interview for a blog, Av. No one can see you but Piper and Kenzie. *winks at Avery* And I’m pretty sure they’ve seen you at your worst.

Avery: My mama would tell you that if you’re not going to look your best, don’t bother leaving the house.

Dylan: You always look great.

Kenzie: Hello. Dylan? Avery? Interview time.

Avery: *stops shooting flirty looks at his mate and straightens up* Okay. Interview time. Hit me.

Kenzie: Well, first off, welcome. We know you two have had quite the go of it and we’re happy to see you here with smiles–for the most part.

Dylan: Glad to be here. *whispers* Even if we were fashionably late.

Avery: *shoves Dylan’s shoulder* Ignore him. He doesn’t understand that in the fashion world, we’re totally on time. Early even.

Piper: Well, now that you’re here, let’s get to it. I’m sure you’ve both got places to be. First question is from me for Dylan.

Before you met Avery, would you say you had a certain “type” for guys you were attracted to? Or did it just depend on the particular guy?

Dylan: *clears throat* Well, not really a type. More… willing. You met Chance, right?

Piper: Oh, yeah. We’ve met Chance.

Dylan: Yeah, so his opening line was “I’m bendy.” If that tells you anything.

Avery: *side eyes Piper, Dylan, and even Kenzie* I can’t believe you’d ask that with me sitting right here. And trust me, Chance’s “bendiness” has nothing on mine.

Dylan: I wouldn’t know. *winks at Piper* Give her a break, brat. She’s just doing her job.

Kenzie: Okay, well, thanks for that. We may need to explore your bendy ways later. For now, let’s move on. This one’s for you, Avery.

Besides shoes and records, is there anything else you collect? Underwear, maybe?

Avery: Well, I do have a nice stash of underwear, but I wouldn’t say I collect it. Maybe clothes overall? I like to go thrift shopping. I know you’re thinking of Macklemore right now, but I’m serious. You can find some great gems when you know where to look. My favorite jean jacket came from a secondhand store.

Dylan: He’s not kidding about the shopping thing. One time he talked me into going. Four hours and all he left with was a T-shirt. A T-shirt. I won’t go again.

Avery: See, he doesn’t appreciate what I call “strategic shopping.” You don’t just go into a store and buy things willy-nilly. Quality over quantity, Dylan.

Piper: All right, before we go off on that tangent, let’s keep the interview going. Here’s another one for Dylan.

If you didn’t design motorcycles for a living, what else would you be doing?

Dylan: Oh, Jesus. Who knows? I’d probably have been in juvie way back when. If not there, then building something. Working with my hands is what I know. It would also have to be something that could involve the guys I grew up with. We come as a package deal. Always have.

Piper: Well, it sounds like you’re doing what you’re meant to be doing, then. How about a question from me to Avery this time.

What was your favorite thing about growing up in Louisiana? Do you miss anything?

Avery: I miss some of my friends sometimes. There were a few hedgehog families down there, but there aren’t any up here. Hedgehogs tend to be solitary, but sometimes it’s nice to have someone around who gets what it’s like to be a hedgehog shifter. I loved New Orleans and spending time there on weekends, getting into trouble. And I like the respect people in the South have for their elders. Or maybe I’m just used to it, so the differences in other parts of the country stand out more. I just think that they’ve had so much more life experience, they deserve a measure of respect. It’s the only thing about my parents’ world that I agree with.

Kenzie: On that same note, what’s it like being a smaller breed shifter in a city of much larger animals?

Avery: To be honest? Lonely. Even being solitary, I think my human side wants to fit in sometimes. It’s hard when you’re the “prey.” I only have so much strength in that form, and though I’m stronger than an average human, I’m still a weaker species among shifters. I get a lot of scorn for it sometimes. People call me a rodent and make jokes. Luckily, I’m not exactly lacking in the confidence department. For the most part, I don’t let them get me down. I might be small but I’m scrappy. *grins*

Dylan: You are scrappy. *loops arm around Avery* And hopefully not as lonely anymore.

Avery: Definitely not lonely anymore.

Kenzie: You two are adorable. Okay. This is for Dylan.

Tell me who Avery is to you.

Dylan: He’s a brat. He’s stubborn and snotty. He can’t cook to save his life and he’s spoiled to the nth degree. *smiles down at his mate’s scowl* But he’s also the most caring, most giving person I’ve ever known. He’s like something I’ve always needed but never knew about. Avery just fit into my life and now I can’t imagine it without him.

Avery: *melts into Dylan’s side* Nice save, by the way. With the way you started, I was starting to worry I might have to send you to the couch to sleep tonight. *grins at Piper and Kenzie*

Dylan: It’s all those things I listed first that make everything else worth it. My life would be boring without your hardheadedness.

Avery: I don’t think our relationship will ever be boring. I think that’s why we work so well.

Piper: I think Kenzie and I would agree on that. Okay, here’s another for Avery.

How did you first get into yoga? Why not spin class or kickboxing instead?

Avery: First of all, I don’t do group exercise classes. I would literally melt into a puddle during a spin class. I can’t handle getting too hot. Also, well… I have a problem with stress shifting. There are times when if I get too worked up, I’ll shift without meaning to. I wanted something that both helped me stay in shape and helped me center myself. Yoga provided both of those things. Though, now that you mention it, kickboxing might not have been a bad idea with some of what’s happened lately. *coughs*

Dylan: Well, kickboxing certainly wouldn’t hurt, would it?

Kenzie: True story. That’s about all the time we have today. Piper and I would like to thank you for coming out today and sharing your… um… thoughts with us. As always it’s been a pleasure.

Piper: It definitely has. Thanks again to Charlie Cochet for having us today, and thanks to all of you for reading. If you want to learn more about Dylan and Avery, be sure to check out the book! We had a blast writing it, and we hope you enjoy our boys as much as we do.

Catch you later, and happy reading!

Piper Vaughn Bio

Piper Vaughn wrote her first love story at eleven and never looked back. Since then, she’s known that writing in some form was exactly what she wanted to do. A reader at the core, Piper loves nothing more than getting lost in a great book—fantasy, young adult, romance, she loves them all (and has a two thousand book library to prove it!). She grew up in Chicago, in an ethnically diverse neighborhood, and loves to put faces and characters of every ethnicity in her stories, so her fictional worlds are as colorful as the real one. Above all, she believes that everyone needs a little true love in their life…even if it’s only in a book.

Kenzie Cade Bio

Kenzie Cade was born and raised in the South where she spends her days in the sometimes stressful field of private medicine observing interesting people and committing them to memory for later use. When she isn’t reading, experimenting with recipes, or being distracted by social media, Kenzie spends time with her family, friends, and the Pomeranian/Long-haired Chihuahua mix who likes to keep her company while she writes. As a young girl, Kenzie dreamed of princesses and their white knights. As an adult (or sort of adult), she dreams of princes and their proverbial white knights, which she attributes the fellow Arkansan S.E. Hinton and her novel The Outsiders. Writing to keep the fictional voices at bay, Kenzie enjoys the journeys her characters travel to find their happy endings, and she loves the challenge of writing a great love story.
