As a member of a wealthy and influential family, Jaime “Jamie” Abello had his life mapped out. Being shipped off to LA with an insurance scam linked to his name was not part of his plan.

It had seemed so simple: pass the Philippines Medical Board Exam;practice in the family-owned and -controlled hospital; join the Board by age forty; and find a partner with whom he could settle down and be himself.

Instead, his father supplies him with a surfeit of money and dangerous secrets and sends him to a strange country.

The Pediatric Residency Program Jamie applies for brings him face to face with untouchable Program Director, Miles Kwon, whom Jamie soon finds to be a man of integrity and vision.

When tragedy strikes, Jamie finds himself falling deeper into depression. Unexpectedly, it’s Miles who helps him work through his pain.

Will Jamie ever experience a life with a loving partner, or will his father’s secrets cause him to lose everything he’s gained?

Excerpt

My father, Jose Manuel, is the current CEO of the Abello Group of Companies, Inc., dealing with insurance policies and the import and distribution of medical pharmaceutical supplies. For almost a hundred years it has been one of the largest family-controlled companies in the Philippines. His younger brother, Fred, sits on the hospital board. My two older brothers, Francisco and Arturo, work with my father as vice presidents, but lately they have been openly challenging him on his decisions. Knowing my father’s dominant personality, I find it curious he has never once corrected them for their insubordination. Neither has he taken up their obvious challenge to his authority.

Then there is my father’s wife, Margarita. Her family invested in the company when she started dating my father. On their marriage, her father gave her a substantial amount of money to buy shares. Now she has her own seat on the board.

The Way You Look Tonight 3Drender

Yeah, my family has that much money going around. Nice, isn’t it? You might think I must be spoiled rotten, and that I go through life and money like there is no tomorrow. Well, in a way I do, but not really. Truth is, all that money and influence doesn’t make my family well-liked. Respected, yes. Feared, yes. But not liked. It doesn’t help that power struggles and infighting amongst the family members are quite famous. At times, they make headline news. In addition, like any family, we have skeletons deep in our closets. I am one of those skeletons.

As for all that money? Well, that really is the root of all of my present troubles.

When my nurse told me the exam results, I choked on my tears. I had worked so hard to get to this point. I had passed! I had made it! This was the best news ever!

Three hours later, my whole world collapsed because of that money.

About the author

JO TANNAH is a wife, mother, and blogger by day, writer by night. It can be difficult to say the least but it is a challenge that keeps her on her toes.

She grew up listening to folktales her father and nannies spun to either entertain the children or send home a message. These narratives stayed with Jo until she finally decided to write them down in a journal way back when she kept one. Years later, going through junk led to finding a long forgotten box and nestled within it was the journal. Reading over the stories of romance, science fiction, and horror that she had taken time to put to paper all those years before brought to light the realization that they were tales she’d never come across in her readings.

The tales Jo write are fictional but all of them are based on what she grew up with and still dreams about. That they have an M/M twist is simply for her pleasure. And she hopes, yours as well.

What was the most challenging part of writing this story?

I began writing this story over six years ago as a fan-fiction. When I decided to try and get published, I basically changed the names to original characters and that was about it. After not a good experience with a micropublisher, I took the story back and began the process of rewriting it from a fan-fiction to a novel.  I learned a few things; a lot of things actually.  It’s not an easy process and I’ve found it much easier to start with an original story.  However, both me and the characters, Ethan and Chance, made it through and I think I was successful in turning Taking A Chance into its own original story.

Is there a genre you haven’t written in that you would love to write?

I’ve always loved spy novels and one day, I may tackle one. My protagonist will be a beautiful and intelligent gay man, but it won’t focus on his sexuality, but the man himself. Of course there will still be some hotness.

Do you have any pets? If not, and you were given the choice to have any pet (fictional or real), what type of pet would you choose and why?

I have a beagle named Toby, a cat named Tuxedo, a Gecko named Rex, a dwarf hamster named Winston and a tank full of tropical fish whom sadly I have not named. We had until about a couple of years ago, a floppy-eared bunny named Gunnar. He was a sweetheart, but irritated the dog and scared the cat.

If my daughter had her way, we’d also have a pet pig.

Coffee or tea?

Decaf coffee, but lately I’ve switched to hot lemon water.

Why did you decide to write Gay Romance?

I started writing fan-fiction seven years ago. When I decided to write outside of that ream and work on getting published, I began reading gay romance and fell in love with the genre and haven’t looked back. It wasn’t that I decided to write gay romance, but I just couldn’t see myself writing anything else, at least for now.

What did you enjoy most about writing this story?

I loved seeing my two characters Chance and Ethan come into their own. There was a point when I stopped seeing them as who they portrayed in my fan-fics and became their own people. I was very proud of that seeing them blossom into their own people.

What’s your writing process like? Are you a plotter, a pantser, or both?

I am most definitely a pantser. I’ll get an idea in my head and I really have no idea where it’s going until I start writing.  I love seeing my characters take unexpected directions and surprise me.  I try writing an outline, but it’s usually very vague and abstract. I have a hard time with beginnings and endings. Once I have the basic idea, then I just let it flesh out through the writing.  It’s sort of an out-of-body experience when my fingers are flashing across the keyboard and the words are flowing onto the screen and when I’m finished with a scene I’m like, “I had no idea that was going to happen!”

How did it feel to sign that first contract?

Really good, lol.  The first time this story was published, I was beyond ecstatic, and star struck by the idea of getting published, and didn’t make good decisions. I let a story get published that wasn’t ready and it was a huge disappointment. I eventually got the story released back to me.  After I completely rewrote it, I submitted it to one publisher and got turned down.  Then, I went back and edited more, and was finally accepted by a great publisher. I went into the contract much smarter this time around, but it was still an awesome feeling.

What advice would you give to an aspiring author looking to get published?

Keep writing, and learn your genre.  And, get a thick skin.

What are your plans for the future? What more can we look forward to from you?

I’m really just getting started. I am currently working on the first novel of a three book series with a working title of After Hours. I actually wrote this as a short story for an anthology. It didn’t get picked up, but I knew my boys had a whole story to tell.

It’s about a frustrated middle manager, and a graduate student working his way through school by waiting tables at a gay bar. Alex gave up his dream of becoming a chef because his parents refused to pay for anything but a degree in business and Nick, born of wealth but disowned because of his sexuality is studying to become a teacher. They meet and change each other’s lives.

I also have a couple of short stories I’m planning for future anthologies.

I love this genre and I plan on writing it for a long time to come. After that, who knows? Maybe romcoms.

Book Trailer

Excerpt

Joel Riley was a difficult captain to work under, and for his first season in the Deep, Sean was pretty sure he despised the man. But another season in he’d grown accustomed to the captain’s volatile temper and inability to compromise. Joel had been a miner all his life, born on Titan to a family of miners. He had the sea in his veins and Ariel was his heart. There was a confidence to Joel that drew the crew to him and an arrogance that kept him slightly out of reach. Rugged, strong, and built for hard labor, he was the exact opposite of Sean—and yet of all the crew, Sean felt closest to Joel. Sean understood the captain’s approach, his passions, and he trusted the older man with his life.

“Captain, is everything all right?” Sean said from the entrance.

Joel jumped, knocking his knees on the control board. “Jesus, boy! What you doing creeping around in the middle of the night?”

“I wasn’t creeping,” Sean said.

“Skulking around, spying on people, and you reckon that’s not creeping,” Joel grumbled.

Deep Cover

Sean thought better of continuing into an argument. If Joel’s mood was testy they were going to go around in circles annoying each other.

“I was about to turn in,” Sean said, deciding it was best to be passive.

“You looking for permission?” Joel’s tone was still curt, but it wasn’t really directed at Sean. Something else was bothering him.

“No, I just thought I’d come in and say good night.”

Joel sighed, apparently appeased by the lack of confrontation. He gave Sean a weak, tired smile. “Better get some rest, Doc. Couple of hours and Harvey will need you to stitch something, no doubt.”

Wasn’t that the truth. Harvey, their engineer, was pretty good when it came to mineral mining and keeping the ship moving, but he could injure himself getting into his dive suit.

“What about you, Sir?”

“I’m not planning on cutting anything,” Joel said, his smile strengthening.

“I meant are you turning in?”

Joel hesitated. Usually the captain was impossible to read, but every so often Sean got hints of the man behind the muscle. There was a softness to him, hidden behind the square jaw and piercing eyes. Sean had always been drawn to his vulnerable side. It crept in from time to time, reminding Sean that the captain, despite liking to pretend he was a demigod, was just a man. A good man.

“Not yet.” A shadow seemed to be hanging over him.

“Would you mind some company?” Sean offered, sensing the captain had something he needed to get off his chest.

“Suit yourself.” It was as close to an invitation as Joel ever gave anyone.
