The M/M Newlywed Game Part II – Sunset Park by Santino Hassell

Thank you for watching Episode 2 of The M/M Newlywed Game with Raymond Rodriguez and David Butler. You can find Episode 1—David’s answers about Raymond—at Santino’s blog tour stop at The Novel Approach on December 11th!

Just a reminder, the purpose of The Newlywed Game is to see how well newlyweds, or newlyfriended as David claims, know each other. Today, I’ll be asking Raymond questions about David to see how well he knows his new BFF. They need fifty points total to win. Last week David got one wrong, which put him at twenty two and a half points. Let’s see if Ray can do better.

Raymond: Oh, I know I’ll do better.

David: That’s because you’re full of crap. You take way longer to get ready than I do. I still maintain I should get full credit for my realistic response. There’s no way a guy with hair that long gets ready faster than me. And I know you maintain it because it’s shiny and silky as fuck. My hair doesn’t look that good and I actually try.

Raymond: Cry more, blondie.

Host: You two are so cute together.

Raymond: Whatever.

Host: Okay Mr. Cheerful, let’s get started. Question 1—What’s David’s favorite comfort food?

Raymond: *side eyes David* Pasta. Any kind of pasta. When he isn’t on his no-carb crap.

David: *flips card that says ‘All of the pasta!!! Especially with seafood and lots of butter and garlic.’*

Host: Good start. How about his favorite comfort movie?

Raymond: A comfort movie? What the hell is that? I’m just going to say Lost in Translation because he thinks he can relate to some people having an existential crisis in Japan. Either that or something Disney-related like Mulan.

David: *laughs and holds up a sign that says ‘Disney movies!’*

Raymond: See? Dork.

David: But you watch it with me, soooo….

Raymond: If I don’t, you’ll get pouty.

Host: Who is David’s favorite singer?

Raymond: Adele.

David: *holds up sign that says ‘Adele is my spirit human’* That was super easy, though.

Host: What about his favorite designer?

Raymond: *sighs* Why I gotta get these wack questions? You didn’t ask him that.

Host: The question can’t all be the same.

Raymond: Whatever. Cole Haan. And I only know that shit because he dragged me out shopping and kept asking my opinion on billions of shoes designed by this Cole person.

David: *hiding a smile, he holds up a sign that says ‘The only designer I consistently purchase is Cole Haan. Other than that, I just go to Express or Urban Outfitters. Shoes make the outfit, tbh.’*

Raymond: Leave it to you to write this long-ass explanation.

David: Well, it’s true!

Host: Question 5—what’s one thing you consistently do when you’re spending time together that David really appreciates?

Raymond: I dunno. I tend to feed him a lot but he always starts whining about carbs, so I can’t tell if he likes it.

David: Of course I like it. You’re trying to take care of me even though it may result in me having to go to the gym an extra day. *holds up sign that says ‘Raymond is a really good cook, and he always makes me something to eat without making a big deal of it. He will make someone an amazing husband one day ;)*

Raymond: So extra.

Host: If I asked David what his most embarrassing moment was that you witnessed, what would he say?

Raymond: The Nicki Minaj thing.

David: UGH. *holds up sign that says ‘Anaconda work out’*

Raymond: Hahahahaaaaa.

Host: Wait, I want to hear this story. Tell us!

Raymond: One day I dropped by David’s apartment without calling ahead of time, and walked in on him twerking in his underwear to that song Anaconda.

David: It was part of this cardio workout! Jesus.

Raymond: It was amazing.

Host: I bet. *smirks* So, you have a key to David’s apartment?

Raymond: He gave it to me.

David: I had a spare!

Raymond: I didn’t ask for it.

David: Well I’ll take it back if you don’t want it. *rolls eyes*

Raymond: Nope. It’s mine now.

Host: Heh heh. Okay, let’s move on. Raymond, what would David say stresses him out the most?

Raymond: Probably his job. David’s a control freak, so him being a teacher is basically a set up for complete disaster. He can’t predict or control most of the shit that happens at school, and he is the highest strung person in the world because of it. When he’s on vacation though, he’s like a totally different dude.

David: High strung and a control freak? Geez, tell me how you really feel. *flips card that reads ‘Everything work-related. Especially standardized testing. OMG Kill me now.’*

Raymond: *pokes David in the side*

Host: Next question—What does David look for in a guy?

Raymond: If I judge by the last asshole he dated—

David: Don’t say that! He might see this.

Raymond: Yeah, and? He ain’t gonna do shit. *crosses arms over chest* Anyway, if I judge by the last dickhead he dated, I’d figure he likes dudes with money and bomb-ass jobs.

David: I can’t believe that’s your answer! That’s seriously your answer?

Host: He can’t change it now that you’ve made it obvious it’s not the answer.

David: *scowls and flips card* I said I’m looking for a guy who isn’t afraid to be sweet to me, and who listens instead of just waiting for his turn to speak. I can’t believe you fucked this up.

Raymond: You fucked it up by being fake as hell in that answer. Your ex was a legit billionaire heir.

David: That’s not why I dated him, for God’s sake. I am so annoyed now. You made us lose because you think I’m a gold digger.

Raymond: Great now he’ll sulk. *watches David pout* *frowns* Jesus, I’m sorry.

David: Hmph. *doesn’t resist when Raymond forces him into a side-hug* *fights a smile*

Host: Aw. You two. Okay, last question! Raymond—what’s one thing David wants to change about your relationship?

Raymond: Probably… wants us to meet each other’s friends. Which is stupid, FYI. I don’t see why we have to involve other annoying people when I only want to spend time with him.

Host: *raises eyebrow*

Raymond: What? It’s true.

David: *flips card that says ‘Be more involved in each other’s lives. I’ve never even met his friends! And I only get to come over when Michael isn’t home L.’* I find it really off-putting and hurtful, but he’s never explained it like that before so I’m finding it hard to be mad.

Raymond: Look, it’s not a big deal. You just happen to momentarily be the person who irritates me the least.

David: You love me. Just admit it. You love me and you don’t want anyone to know because—

Raymond: Stop right there before you say something to annoy me and I have to retract the nice thing I said.

David: No! I like it when you’re sweet to me. *plasters himself to Raymond*

Host: Are you sure you’re not together?

Raymond: No.

Host: You’re not sure?

Raymond: We’re not together!

Host: Well, maybe you should consider it.

David: Oh?

Host: Yes. You’d get to know each other better and wouldn’t have lost! Sorry, kids. Better luck next time.

Raymond: What a fucking scam. We literally had to get nothing wrong in order to win. Your show sucks.

David: That is so lame.

Host: Stay tuned for the next round of The M/M Newlyweds Game!

SUNSET PARK blurb:

Sunset Park

A Five Boroughs Story

Raymond Rodriguez’s days of shoving responsibility to the wayside are over. His older brother wants to live with his boyfriend, so Raymond has to get his act together and find a place of his own. But when out-and-proud David Butler offers to be his roommate, Raymond agrees for reasons other than needing a place to crash.

David is Raymond’s opposite in almost every way—he’s Connecticut prim and proper while Raymond is a sarcastic longshoreman from Queens—but their friendship is solid. Their closeness surprises everyone as does their not-so-playful flirtation, since Raymond has always kept his bicurious side a secret.

Once they’re under the same roof, flirting turns physical, and soon their easy camaraderie is in danger of being lost to frustrating sexual tension and the stark cultural differences that set them apart. Now Raymond not only has to commit to his new independence—he has to commit to his feelings for David or risk losing him for good.

Review Quotes for the Five Boroughs series

SUNSET PARK:

“While this second novel of Hassell’s Five Boroughs novels has all the heat, overwhelming desire and tension that readers have come to expect, he also grounds his tale in very real issues, like class and ethnic divides, social struggles, and the difficulty of growing up.” – RT Magazine

SUTPHIN BOULEVARD:

“Having two sexy, dirty-talking alphas wrestle their strong feelings for each other is mouthwatering.” — RT Web Reviews

“Hassell doesn’t sugarcoat his vibrant characters, making them as gritty as the Queens neighborhood in which they grew up… There are plenty of steamy sex scenes; overall, a welcome addition to romance collections in urban libraries.” — Library Journal

Character Interview with Alex and Lyric plus Giveaway – Truth in Lace by Tempeste O’Riley

Please welcome the fabulous Tempeste O’Riley who’s dropped by to interview Alex and Lyric from Truth in Lace! Enjoy!

2015 Divider

“Good morning, Alex and Lyric. I hope you don’t mind me taking you away from your busy high school schedules by asking you a few questions.”

Alex laughs and smiles wide. “What kind of teenager minds ditching homework?”

“Seriously? None I know,” Lyric adds with her own smile.

It’s uncanny how alike the two before me are. Alex is dressed in jeans, a tight red T-shirt, a chain going from his belt loop to his back pocket, a pair of combat boots, and a black leather jacket draped over the back of the chair he’s sitting on. Lyric is in a flirty red skirt, a white blouse, white low heels, and a white leather coat behind her. And yet, as opposite as they seem, the feeling of sameness hangs heavy in the air between them.

“Right. Stupid question. How about I just ask how you’re both doing now that the events in Truth in Lace have happened?”

Alex shifts in his chair and looks around before swallowing hard. “Um, good. It’s nice to know I’m not the freak I thought I was. I mean, to know that there are other people out there like me. To know that Lyric won’t hate me,” he adds so softly I almost don’t catch the words.

“Oh, Lex. I could never hate you. You know better. You’re my wombmate, my other half. Even when I want to strangle you, I still love you.”

Alex chuckles and nods. “Yeah, love you too, you brat. But really, it makes surviving living at home a little while longer a lot easier. Our parentals won’t understand or accept me, but I don’t care about that. I only care about what Lyric thinks.”

“I think you look hot in my clothes.” She fake pouts, drooping her shoulders as she does. “Just no stealing my boyfriend.”

“Oh, ick. No way in hell I’d ever touching your guy! No, uh-uh, so not ever happening.”

“So tell us what you really think,” I interject, trying not to laugh.

“What? Her boyfriend is a total ’phobe and so not my type. Besides, why would I want a guy that she’s—” Alex stage whispers “—had sex with?” He shivers and grimaces. “No. Just… no.”

Lyric swats Alex, then they both start giggling. “Seriously. I don’t think our author needed to know that part. The story isn’t about me, and Tempeste only writes about boy bits, even when you’re having a girl day, you still have boy bits. So lay off my love life.”

“Fine, fine. So what questions do you have for us, Tempe?” Alex faces me and feigns total focus on my every word and motion.

“Your story is a short so I don’t want to ask too much and not leave anything for your readers to discover, but Lyric, what made you want to help Alex? And Alex, when you move away from home, will you start to shop in the women’s department for yourself?”

Lyric blinks a few times and tilts her head to the side. “Um, my best friend and twin was hurting. I could see that plain as anything. There’s little I wouldn’t do for Lex, including a little research. It wasn’t hard to Google about boys that weren’t boys all the time and all. I was only worried about being caught by out librarian as I didn’t want it getting back to our parents. He’s right, they’re both horrible about anyone that’s not what they deem acceptable. I sucks, but Lex and I’ll move away to college in just a few months and be free of their control. I’ll help teach him to dress right and do his makeup and all then. I’ll make sure he’s a beautiful woman, just like he’s a handsome man.”

Alex sniffles and leans over to hug Lyric. “Love you too, Ly,” he whispers. After a moment, he sits up and smooths his hands down his jeans before he looks up again. “Sorry about that. Um, shopping? Right?”

“Yep. You and shopping in the women’s department.”

“Yeah. Right now, I only have what you know about from in the pages of Truth in Lace, but once I’m free of here, I will explore more and shop for all of me. Not just what others deem acceptable. It’s hard not being me on the days where what I’m wearing now wouldn’t be true. Today it is, but yesterday this would have grated on my nerves. Actually, what I wore yesterday did drive me nuts because it wasn’t me. I was having a very girl day but I, of course, had to pretend to be all boy….”

“I’m so sorry, Alex. I wish I could make the world understand that even gender isn’t binary. I’m Genderfluid, as is my youngest, so I do get it. I promise. It’s a constant struggle to deal with others that don’t understand or that refuse to, but I promise, it get’s better. And once you’re on your own, you can decide how to live and chose who is and is not allowed in your life. So don’t give in on give up, hon.”

He gives a watery smile. “I won’t. No matter what. I won’t!”

“I won’t let him,” Lyric adds, her voice firm.

“I’m glad. Now, I want to tell those reading this that Lyric is Alex’s twin sister from Truth in Lace and that you see her again in Temptations of Desire, which is where Alex finally gets his happily ever after! Temptations of Desire is a full novel and came out first, which is how I would read them, but either order is fine as neither will spoil the ending of the other.

“Thank you, Alex and Lyric, for stopping by and letting me chat with you and introduce you a little to your readers. Is there anything either of you would like to say before you go?”

“Yeah,” Alex says, shifting in his chair again. “Never think you’re the only one like you. You’re not a freak. There are others and you are not alone! Being Genderfluid is not wrong, sick, or even all that weird. You just need to reach out and find others like yourself. I was lucky, Lyric helped me see that. I hope you find your way and remember, never give up!”

“Thanks, Alex and Lyric!”
